Elena Penga is one of Greece’s most dynamic and most produced playwrights. She also writes fiction and directs for the stage. In 2012 she received the prestigious Ourani award of the Greek Academy of Letters for her book Tight Belts And Other Skin. Her short story The Untrodden was official entry for Greece in Best European Fiction 2017, published by Dalkey Archive Press, U.S.A. She has three books of short fiction and nine books of plays plus her work has been translated in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Swedish, Dutch. She has been guest at the Biennale of Young Artists, Lisbon (1994), the Bay Area Playwrights Festival in San Fransisco (1995), the Bonner Biennale of New European Plays in Germany (1998), Belgrade International Theatre Festival (1998), Theatertreffen in Berlin (2001), Gessneralle Theater of Zurich (2002), Verse Waar Festival, Holland (2003), International Monodrama Festival Fujairah in UAE (2005), Menagerie Theatre Company of Cambridge, UK (2006), IMEC in Caen (France) in 2014 and The International Lorca Center (Spain) 2019. Her plays in Greece have been produced by The Athens and Epidaurus Festival, The National Theater in Athens, The National Theater of Northern Greece, The European Center in Delphi, The Municipal Theater of Kalamata, Notos Theater, and others. She has taught for many years at the University of Patras. Currently, she teaches playwriting at the Master’s Program for Creative Writing of The Greek Open University.
