The iconic building which houses the Theatre of the Society for Macedonian Studies was designed by Vasileios Kassandras. It stands in the general vicinity of Thessaloniki’s iconic White Tower (at Ethnikis Amynis 2). Its foundations were laid in 1951, making it one of the first new buildings that would usher in the modernization of the city’s built environment in the latter half of the 20th century. It was inaugurated with the première production of Angelos Sikelianos’ “Sibylla” on 26 October 1962. The Organization for the “European Capital of Culture - Thessaloniki 1997” undertook to renovate the complex, and in particular to reconstruct the theatre, without altering the architectural character of the building. For sixty years now, the Society for Macedonian Studies building has served Thessaloniki’s long-standing theatrical tradition, functioning flawlessly within the urban fabric in both city planning and symbolic terms. The Theatre of the Society for Macedonian Studies remains a main stage of the National Theatre of Northern Greece to this day.
