One of Thessaloniki’s open-air theatres, the Forest (Dasous) Theatre is built into the side of
Kedrinos Hill
. With a view over the entire city and its harbour, the theatre has been in continuous operation since the 1970s. The original theatre, a construction with metal supports and wooden stands designed by the architect Patroklos Karantinos, was built with funds contributed by the Greek National Tourism Organization in 1965. Later, in 1976, the theatre was reconstructed, with concrete this time, in line with plans by Professor Nikolaos Moutsopoulos of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Its current form is the result of the refit conducted in 1997 in the context of the
European Capital of Culture
- Thessaloniki 1997. Every summer, the Forest Theatre becomes a venue where local theatre lovers can meet visitors who have come to attend the annual Forest Festival, the central cultural event of the Thessaloniki summer. At the Festival, audiences can enjoy a rich programme of events including theatre, music and dance in a beautiful natural environment.
