The
National Theatre of Northern Greece
aims at the peaceful coexistence and creative development of the countries of the Balkan Peninsula in Thessaloniki, and thus establishes the theatre stage “Open Borders”. In cooperation with
“45th Dimitria”
, the theatre stage “Open Borders” will host the National Theatres of Albania, Bulgaria and Serbia, which will present
“Electra”
by Sophocles,
“Don Juan”
by Moliere and
“Bacchae”
by Euripides respectively. In the terms of the cooperation of the Balkan National Theatres many activities will follow, which include among others the operation of a theatre workshop of creative writing in Thessaloniki with the cooperation of neighbouring countries. The cooperation also includes publishing activity with the translation and publication of five theatre plays of every country by the other participant countries.
The
National Theatre of Northern Greece
inaugurates the theatre stage “Open Borders” wishing to support and highlight the special character of artistic creation in the Balkan area as well as an uninterrupted and substantial communication between the theatres of the neighbor countries of Southeastern Europe.
Three major productions –two performances of ancient drama plays and one of a molierian comedy- presented by the National Theatres of Albania, Serbia and Bulgaria will be hosted by the NTNG at the Theatre of the Society for Macedonian Studies, in the framework of the Dimitria Festival.
The the theatre stage “Open Borders” is a platform where theatres and theatergoers can meet, exchange views, create a basis of possible collaborations and open up to new perspectives of artistic creation in the neuralgic area of the Balkans; an area with a long and potent tradition in theatre and the arts. This meeting point of different cultures, brought together through a common historical and social-political background, can build a strong bridge towards a modern collective identity in the theatrical landscape.

Director’s note
"Electra" is brought from ancient as an artistic provocation to audience by Tirana National Theater. It is a performance that renders the everlasting tragic present, keeping the original attraction and composition created by Sophocles - the great tragic author. Through explores Electra’ character, the play persists protest, where senses, movement, feelings, rhythms, sounds, plastics and mannerisms merge together captivating Electra phenomenon. As a result, the scenic act is created as an "Electra Universe", where the extremely hate and revenge, which come as a result of the huge witness inheritance of human suffering, are risen up and cohabit.

Director’s note
Moliere’s Don Juan is the most interesting, the most profound, the most philosophical and the most pure of all other interpretations of the myth Don Juan... I nurture no curiosity for the lover, the notorious seducer in this play, the dream of every woman, the adventurer. This is only the prelude, the adornment, the icing on a content much more interesting and profound. It is all about a person who is the embodiment of freedom. A person with no dependency of any kind – family, religious or social. This is emanation of the free man. In the twenty-first century this character acquires a different painfulness. My interest in Don Juan is for his true possession of liberty. The issue here is the question we were asking about ten years ago – what does a man do with his freedom when he already has it. When a man is awakened to the consciousness of his total freedom, he understands he has no one to share it with. Freedom is just like fame; both are very dependent on the society we live in.

Director’s note
Talking about common opinion that Greek drama is something boring and static, the director is representative of future audience during rehearsals and I don't accept to be bored while I work. The "Bacchae" have that Shakespearean moment-there is no tragedy without a comedy. Comical and funny parts exist only to make the tragedy even more severe at the end. i don't expect the modern audience anywhere, be it in Stockholm, Berlin or Belgrade, to know the whole Greek mythology, therefore the play is based neither on mythical nor on historic point of view. During rehearsals we talked about the 60's, about how everything was great - there was free love, sex, Woodstock, flower power, music, everything that was out of ordinary, very strict society. But then, only a few years later, there was a war in Vietnam, murder of Sharon Tate Polanski and events in Manson's house. The thing that started as mild, pleasurable and loving turned into brutality.
