Α FEW WORDS ABOUT THE PLAY
In Neochori, Crete, during the Occupation, the large Ftenoudou family lives under the weight of guilt, religious oppression, and the rigid moral codes of the countryside. In this stifling environment, the youngest daughter, Erato, her mother’s beloved, falls in love with an Italian soldier hiding in the basement of their house and becomes pregnant by him. After the father’s death, the eldest daughter of the family takes control of the household, enforcing her will through absolute obedience to an outdated value system, internalized misogyny, and the bitterness and frustrations of sexual deprivation. At the same time, the need to uphold the image of a fantasy superiority of the Ftenoudou family drives her into a meaningless grandiosity that fuels social hypocrisy: she conceals (or destroys) anything that harms the family honour and parades every meaningless convention that lends prestige to their decaying life. In this environment, every form of love and affection is forbidden, criminalized, and persecuted. Every need for life withers.
