Α FEW WORDS ABOUT THE PLAY
Unable to come to terms with the rejection of his beloved Melibea, the young lovestruck knight Calisto takes his servant Sempronio’s advice and seeks the help of Celestina, a wicked match-maker and ex-prostitute who has turned to procuring and knows all the secrets of the heart. Celestina is an expert when it comes to alchemies and potions, and she can solve any romantic problem... for a fee. Celestina sets her plan in motion, and the young couple fall deeply and passionately in love. Cunning, manipulative and extremely skilled at understanding people and exploiting their weaknesses, she uses unorthodox methods and machinations to sully their pure platonic love, entangling our heroes in a series of precarious situations...
Where will this powerful love lead, now that Celestina’s alchemies and trickery have led to a series of deadly sins, including lust and avarice, in the superstitious society of 15th-century Spain?
“The Tragicomedy of Calisto and Melibea”, or simply “Celestina”, which audiences preferred, is an original humanistic work published in 1499. Its plot includes certain elements which were shocking for the era and which both astounded and beguiled its readers. This directorial reading of the work adds a contemporary transgression and underscores the position of women in society, the ‘virtue’ and commercial exploitation of purity, and the sale and commodification of the female body on a vast scale down the centuries.
