“ALGORITHM. Surrealistic Wanderings Through Memory” Conceived & Directed by: Alexandra Kazazou & Eleana Georgouli Venue: Foyer of the Society for Macedonian Studies Opening: 11 March 2023 Rating: 13+ Duration: 80min (no interval)
A few words about the play
“Algorithm” is a journey into the anatomy of the major disasters and civil wars which humanity has experienced over the last century. The production invites the viewer to reflect on the workings of memory and forgetting through wanderings that prove unexpectedly surreal.
Guided by two women who find themselves trapped in an abandoned toy town after a major disaster, we embark on a descend into the unconscious and the collective trauma of War in an unexpectedly tender yet humorous examination of how the communicating vessels of memory and forgetting operate. “It was there. Then. Spread out before a nameless sea. Somewhere in the middle of the earth. Somewhere east? Maybe. It doesn’t matter. It was there. There, yes there. There our little wildernesses, there the walls we leapt, all there. In this homeland. There. Somewhere in the middle of the earth. Very close from here. From here so far away.” Director's Note
True stories and fiction intertwine in this handcrafted performance about the anatomy of human memory. Alexandra Kazazou and Eleana Georgouli (A. & E.), accompanied by original music by the legendary Giannis Aggelakas, on stage in the unexpected world conjured up by Christos Laskaris and Vasilis Chatzopoulos with the help of the lighting created by Karol Jarek, in the Foyer of the Theatre of the Society for Macedonian Studies. A tender yet humorous musical narrative about memory and forgetting—communicating vessels in the forefront of the great historical transitions that shook the Western World in the 20th century. A. & E. map their own and others’ stories onto an improvised labyrinth of memory. Employing a chain of poetic episodes, the two women recount and recall the war in the Balkans, their partisan grandmothers, and bizarre erotic encounters from the past in a cocktail of memories that transcends the former Yugoslavia and gets as far as Lebanon, while a hospital room is transformed into a bus stop in Cuban Trinidad. An imaginary past but a future too unfold in an unpredictable memory-adventure in which anything could happen.
