"If you want to break up raise your hand" by Giorgos Kapoutzidis Directed by: Giorgos Kapoutzidis Venue: Lazaristes Monastery - Sokratis Karantinos Stage Opening: 28 October 2023 Rating: Suitable for ages 12+ Duration: 90 min (no interval) Giorgos Kapoutzidis’ first play, which received rave reviews and was beloved by audiences from its very first performance, continues its successful run, highlighting, in singular fashion, the concerns and social issues that Giorgos Kapoutzidis knows so well how to address.
A few words about the play A love undeclared for twenty years. A marriage being ripped apart by an infidelity. And another that’s postponed indefinitely, though no one dares inform the groom. An ex, a current partner, countless internet dates, and a house that’s slowly... flooding. Literally. And before they sink for good, they have to tell the truth. Everyone to everyone.
Director's Note Thessaloniki is the city that taught me to love the theatre. It’s where I made my first appearance on a theatre stage. And it fills me with great joy and emotion to be returning here. “If you want to break up raise your hand” was the first story I wrote for the stage. As I was writing it, I had fun playing around with my own insecurities and mental blocks, which I offloaded on the eight protagonists you see on stage. They’re not perfect—like all of us, they carry their fear and their hurt around with them, and I love them for it. Now, I hope you will love them in your turn. I was lucky enough to get to know eight wonderful actors on my return home: Eleftheria, Chrysa, Marianna, Nikos, Giorgos, the two Giannis and, of course, Ms Efi Stamouli, who honoured me with her trust. Generous to a fault, she was there for me every time I needed her precious help. I am very grateful to the good folk at the NTNG: to Mr Peltekis, Mr Sougaris and of course Giannis Paraskevopoulos, without whom I could not have done what I did. Dear Giannis, you have my eternal gratitude. I hope a certain someone is up there, on high, looking down on us. Someone who shone in this play, the first time it was staged in Athens. Someone who filled the lives of everyone he met with light. And who will shine on always in my memory and in my heart. No matter how many times it is performed and where, this play will always be dedicated to my dear Panos. I love you and I miss you! So enjoy yourselves. Thank you for honouring us with your presence here tonight.
