A few words about the play
The celebrated poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca wrote “The House of Bernarda Alba”, his last—and perhaps most moving—work, in 1936.
In an impoverished Spanish hamlet in the early 20th century, Bernarda Alba, a tyrannical mother who has lost her second husband, keeps her five daughters locked up at home, in mourning and to preserve the honour and dignity of her family. But even though the male presence is forbidden, erotic passion still manages to breach the fortifications of the family home. And when passion comes into conflict with society's stringent rules, death is the result.
