Crossroads
2019-2020 National Theatre of Northern Greece
Crossroads - Nikos Bakolas
Opening: Lazaristes Monastery - Sokratis Karantinos Stage, 12/10/2019
History. Collective memory. A square that renders visible the actions of individuals. A city permanently beset by turmoil.
The National Theatre of Northern Greece commissioned the playwright Akis Dimou to adapt for the stage “Crossroads” by Nikos Bakolas, a landmark novel in postwar Greek literature.
The story unfolds in Thessaloniki through the interwar period, World War Two, the Occupation, the Resistance, Liberation and the Civil War. The main characters belong to three families headed, respectively, by the working-class Fotis, the petit bourgeois journalist Christos and the upper-class Giannis—whose family the orphaned refugee Angela will join. Poetic intermedia referencing episodes from the Byzantine period (the civil strife between the Zealots and the aristocracy, 1342-1349) serve as a distant echo of a popular uprising from the past and underscore the cyclical nature of History.

“Crossroads” was honoured with the 1st State Prize for Fiction in 1988. Adapting such a complex text for the stage was a risk and a challenge for the NTNG and for Eleni Efthymiou, an extremely talented director of the new generation making her NTNG directorial debut.
