Τhe National Theatre of Northern Greece has been presenting Educational Programmes addressed to students of primary and secondary schools since 2002. In 2023-2024 season, the National Theatre of Northern Greece realizes the educational programme “Journey into Ancient Theatre... ex machina”, which aims to familiarize students of secondary schools with ancient drama through interactive exercises that employ technology. In a specially designed area, students can test the new technical possibilities of the dynamic tools for the revival of important ancient drama performances. In addition, they learn about historical performances, get information about the function of individual stage objects, interact with virtual objects through an augmented reality environment, and learn about the building blocks of drama. They are then given the opportunity to practically combine the above elements to produce a short action shot. The activity forms part of “Prometheus”, a programme realized by the National Theatre of Northern Greece in collaboration with the University of Patras and IRIDA Labs and funded by the Partnership Agreement Operational Programme “Central Macedonia 2014-2020” (ESPA 2014-2020). In addition, the project “NTNG in Education” is expected to continue through funding from the NSRF (National Strategic Reference Framework), which involves the implementation of educational programmes (theatrical workshops by specialized theatre educators with the support of mental health professionals) for primary and secondary education in five regions of the country: Central Macedonia, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Western Macedonia, Epirus, and Thessaly. This includes kindergartens, special schools, intercultural schools, integration departments, refugee reception centers, minority areas, and Roma communities, aiming to develop students' interest in school activities, reduce and prevent school dropout, promote equal access to theatrical education, eliminate social inequalities, and encourage the participation of teachers in cultural activities.
