Sofia Karakantza directs Giorgos Veltsos’ “I Expect”. A new play about memory, death and immortality. “I Expect” is an obituary notice of the theatre we have known, and of history. It is a game in which the living and the dead compete for domination. The dead take up a lot of space and the living take revenge by shrinking historical memories into fragments of old refrains and echoes of slogans. The monumental figures of 1974’s return to democracy are being disestablished and disconnected from the essence of their act. Mourning emerges from the laughter mixed with tears, the political takes on a new meaning as it is linked to a daily and ever-growing sense of loss. Who will emerge victorious in this struggle between fragments of memory and mourning over a chasm wrought by loss?
