“Waiting Room / Ηumanity” Directed by: Enke Fezollari Venue: Lazaristes Monastery – Studio Theatre Οpening: 9 February 2024 Rating: +16 A few words about the play There is no time and space. There are only six people who meet and tell their stories, setting up a personal maypole, an existential whirlwind that sucks in dream and reality. Director's Note A battle takes place within each one of us, two wolves reside within our souls. One is gentle, full of kindness and love and the other one is full of envy, hate and greed. The one that prevails at the end of the day is the one we feed more. Humanity on hold, humanity is us. Prompted by waiting rooms, stories of transition, of luck, of mourning, of love, of war, oftentimes unfolding in train stations and other times in a hospital room, human stories and great events of Humanity march. Are we born good or evil? Are we ready to change the world or “why bother, why change it”? On which side of history do we stand? Humanity produces art, miracles, wars, concentration camps, blind terrorist attacks; I wonder, what are we made of and how do we pass that on? How does 9/11 meet Auschwitz? What does diffusion of responsibility mean? How can one twenty-cent piece unsettle someone to their core, how can Patisia and the first dog that went to space be connected? Are we, perhaps, alone or are we waiting for death? Who was patient zero for AIDS? How did the atomic bomb ignite a new trend in hairstyles? Can the dead speak? How did the Cities Police come into being in Greece and why did the women’s rights and slave rights movements become associated with animals having no rights? The performance moves within the genre of mockumentary-documentary and not only draws from the personal material of the performers but also reaches the edge of humanity and creates a universal puzzle of scenic installation, through historical research and event documentation. After all, all these ingredients constitute the scenic story of each of us and the Theatre of Memory. And we roll around in a valley of pain and of unbearable tears, trying to heal our wounds with prayer, wanting to salvage our trauma in one silent sinful holiness of immortality of the spirit.
