The only opera written by the famous composer, which takes place in the Spanish prisons of Seville in the 16th century, is being presented at the Eptapyrgio prison area, within the framework of the events for the Cultural Olympiad 2001-2004. Florestan is imprisoned due to his ideological views, which oppose injustice and tyranny. He is condemned to a slow death by starvation by his political adversary, Don Pizarro, the prison director. Florestan's loyal wife, Leonore, disguises herself into a boy (Fidelio) and enters the service of Rocco the guard in order to help her loved one. When the sudden visit by the minister, Don Fernando, is announced, who intends to inspect the prisons, Don Pizarro decides to kill Florestan immediately and get rid of his body by burying him in his own cell. However, the hideous crime is prevented by the courageous and decisive intervention of his disguised wife, who reveals the terrible conspiracy and in this way the truth is disclosed and justice is done.
