The play takes us back in time to present not the glorious achievements of the Greek freedom fighters, but rather the inglorious goings-on behind the scenes of the Revolution. Who were the “protectors” who used their position as a shield behind which to protect their own interest and power?
Miltos Efthymiadis’ scabrous farce reveals the socio-political reality of the Greek struggle for freedom and points the finger at the systemic suppression of the truth ever since. His targets include not only individuals long presented as controversial in the history of the Greek Revolution, but also iconic figures who have always been shown as having bring the revolution to a successful conclusion. The rich, the clergy, the banks, foreign powers: what role did they play back then, and what political games do they continue to play to this day?
“The Protectors” was staged for the first time at the Art Theatre, Athens, in 1976.
