The Trojan Women
by Euripides
With Troy in ruins, the Trojan women mourn their city’s fall as they wait to learn what their future holds. Among them, old Hecuba, exhausted and resigned to her fate, bears the burden of a long life lived from glorious past to tragic present upon her aged shoulders. The blows rain down one after another from start to finish, culminating in the death of her grandson, Astyanax; when the Greeks resolve to cast the infant off the battlements, they also kill Troy’s last hope of survival. The powers of destruction seem irrepressible, almost divine. Even the gods who sided with the Greeks change their stance at the sight of such heinous acts, configuring the tragedy outcome that will be set in motion when the warriors depart for home. But in this work, revenge brings no relief to the suffering of the defeated.
Framed by the vivid contrasts of his narratives of past glories and present torments, Euripides’ plot unfolds as a slow-motion journey towards absolute pain. His work also serves as a critique of his contemporaries and of Athens’ brutal assault on Milos. Taking arguments premised on the “barbarous” nature of the Other, the tragic poet turns them ingeniously on their head to encourage the Athenians to reflect on their own profligacy. The
Trojan Women
, which was presented at the Great Dionysia in 415 BC and is the only surviving work of Euripides’ Trojan trilogy, is a lament sung for anyone who finds themselves at the mercy of their conquerors, a humane howl in solidarity with the victims of every war. In this work, Man, standing alone in the face of tragedy, among others but set far apart from them, seeks a new way to survive his inexorable fate.
