In the age when 'Comedia de l'arte' falls into decline with its actors trying hard to cause great laughter among the spectators with their grotesque jokes, Carlo Goldoni appears and brings about a revolution in the theatre of Venice, becoming the precursor of modern European urban theatre. In the 'New house' Goldoni observes, describes and criticizes his social environment, without however ridiculing his characters. The lack of essential relations between people, the gain of money and the distress for social ascent are the main themes of the play. Fundamental subject in this comedy is also the permanently repeated conflict between the conventionality and the truth of human heart. The 'New house' belongs to Goldonis plays of maturity. The main characteristic of Goldonis work is the coexistence of a stylized air and realism.
