In 1940-41 Brecht, while in self exile in Finland, writes the play ''Mr. Puntila and his Man Matti'' based on narrations and a play draft by Finnish poet Hella Wuolijoki The controversial problematic of the lively personality of landowner Puntila, who becomes human only when he is drunk, thus shaping the alibi of his cruel and inhuman conscious acts, is contrasted with his servant Matti who struggles between reason and the friendly feelings for his master. Built on the motifs of episodes and old folk epics, Brecht creates an atmosphere of a poetic folk feast, a colorful comedy full of music and highlights the class relationships and differences of a society living in the serene landscape of the Finnish countryside.
