The play is an island ethnography. We see the life of the people of the sea represented almost with photographic perfection. The writer creates alive types and penetrates in the aspects of their heart, while, at the same time presents generally the social conflictions of the time. The exceptionally realistic sketching of the seamen is due to the fact that the writer lived for a great period with the fishermen in the island of Salamina and was given thus the chance to meet closely their world, which as he says, is a world pure and real. The every day contact of the seamen with danger has developed in their heart the solidarity, the daring, as well as the contempt for death. Most of these poor fishermen are ready to sacrifice themselves for their friend, the woman they love and their home.
