Dionysos with his servant Xanthias descends to Hades to bring back a good tragic poet from the upper world because the three most important poets, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides are already dead. On the way to Hades they meet different creatures, deads and spirits and when they reach their destination they call Aeschylus and Euripides to compete in their art reciting lyrical passages from their plays for the better to win. After a heated argument and the assertion of opposite positions, established element of every ancient tragedy, Dionysos weighs the verses of the poets and asks to hear which of the two has the better advice for the town. Aeschylus was declared winner and the Chorus sends off the God and the poet who are going to return together in the upper world.
