A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE PLAY
What weighs on the heart of Don Carlos, making him avoid his father, King Philip II of Spain? What is this secret that the ever-watchful eyes of the court struggle to uncover? Under the terrifying authority of the king and the power of the Inquisition, in 16th-century Spain, youthful idealism, love, sensitivity, the need for change, for action, and for life itself suffocate within the heart of Don Carlos. Unable to manage his passions, he places his hopes in his close friend, the Marquis of Posa. Posa’s strong will, his progressive ideas, and his faith and loyalty to Don Carlos lead him to implement a plan aimed at overthrowing the monarch’s reign of state terror.
“Don Carlos” was first presented in August 1787 and is based on a 17th-century French romantic novel. Using 16th-century Spain as a backdrop, Schiller challenges the absolutism of his own time, advocating for freedom of thought and the ideas of the Enlightenment. Through a particularly complex plot and multi-dimensional characters, the author revives critical, timeless concerns, developing dialectically the conflict between authoritarian power and free action, despotism and disobedience, moral imperative and new ideals, idealism and reality.
