A mind-bending theatre piece that explores our perceived power over memory
The National Theatre of Northern Greece, in collaboration with Teatro Sanità (Naples) and Sardegna Teatro (Cagliari), presents "Memento Mori", a production in the framework of the International project "R-Evolution".
A few words about the play
Have you ever pondered the extent of our power over memory? How one decides which aspects of their past are worth preserving and which should be discarded? Drawing inspiration from these thought-provoking questions, "Memento Mori" takes centre stage, challenging audience members to confront the paradoxes around their personal historiographies.
"Memento Mori" unearths this struggle, offering a deeply introspective exploration of a family grappling with the task of decluttering their home and, by extension, their memories. With a father and two brothers at the helm, a profound debate ensues over what to keep and what to discard from their trove of memories. As pressures mount, secrets unravel, and personal histories become imperiled, the play illuminates the profound consequences that arise when memories are dismissed or erased.

Lyto Triantafyllidou
Their poignant journey serves as a mirror to society's own internal battle with the notion of preserving or canceling, and the effects this process has on History. Through the story of a family, the audience is invited into a theatrical court, where a fierce debate ensues as the father and brothers act as the officers of the court. As a result, the play explores several themes and functions of memory: The persistent nature of memory versus its own fluidity, the burden of nostalgia, the impact of trauma, and the elusive nature of happiness, as well as the necessity of acceptance and healing.
The creators of "Memento Mori", Leonardo Tomasi and Lyto Triantafyllidou, dive into the controversial theme of Cancel Culture to highlight the delicate balance between accountability and the erasure of personal and collective history. Furthermore, they retract the peculiar case of the Cadaver Synod, the infamous ecclesiastical trial of Pope Formosus, who had been dead for about seven months during his trial. Exhumed and brought to the papal court by his successor, Pope Formosus was condemned to oblivion (Damnatio Memoriae).
