A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE PLAY

Employing the language of its teenage protagonist, the play lets us into the head of a young man in search both of himself and his future in a less-than-ideal family environment.

Nineteen-year-old Billy Fisher lives at home with his parents and his 90-year-old grandmother in an industrial town in the North of England. Billy doesn't fit in. Anywhere. He's a big kid who's still trying to understand the adult world, which he uses every means at his disposal to escape. Lies become his escape route, and the material from which he builds himself a personality. So it isn't strange that he dreams of being a writer who pens a book entitled "Restart for a new beginning". Will he manage to get out of his small town? Will he find a way to channel his imagination? No one can deny him that right. Because the lies he tells are made of the stuff of dreams!

Keith Waterhouse's novel was a best-seller when it was published in 1959; he immediately adapted it for the stage in collaboration with Willis Hall in 1960. There have been numerous versions since then, with the 1963 film regarded as a high point of the New British Cinema.
