THE SECOND SURPRISE OF LOVE, has started rehearsals (24/09/2020)
“The second surprise of love”, the new production has started rehearsals
Coproduction:
NTNG
,
Greek Art Theatre Karolos Koun
“The second surprise of love”
, the new production from the
National Theatre of Northern Greece
and
the
Greek Art Theatre Karolos Koun
, has started rehearsals; translated and directed by Vassilis Papavassileiou, the play is set to première in October.
Vassilis Papavassileiou, the great man of the theatre and intellectual, returns to Thessaloniki, the city of his birth, and to the NTNG with a work which has never been staged in Greece before. It’s worth noting that this is the fifth time he has directed a play by Marivaux, a writer he knows well and is particularly fond of.
A few words about the play
“Love! Does love do away with logic?”
The Marquise is inconsolable after the death of her husband. And when he is rejected by his beloved, the Knight’s life becomes sheer torment. The mutual attraction they feel from their very meeting will turn their lives upside-down, like a bolt from the blue. They will fear what they feel and call it friendship, but the emotion will quickly escape their control and turn into love. At their sides, their two servants drive the plot forward with their playful intrigues and a heavy dose of naivety, forever undoing what they seek to do and making the audience laugh with their spontaneity and the light-heartedness and flexibility their position permits.
The quips and retorts of verbal duelling play a central role in all the plays by the celebrated author of the French Enlightenment, Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux (1688–1763), who has been described as an “ideal painter of the genesis of love”. With his customary subtlety and refinement, Marivaux brings comedy to his portrayal of human passions, penetrating the subtle shades of emotion while presenting a multi-faceted critique of the society of his era.
