A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE PLAY
A play by Michail Anthis, who has won four Culture Ministry State Awards, this hymn to Mankind and to Peace is as moving as it is thought-provoking.
An Israeli captain and a Palestinian teacher are trapped together in the ruins of a bombed-out house in Gaza. The two men, immobilized, buried alive beneath the rubble, try in vain to free themselves. With heartbreaking cries, they seek some sign of life from their family and comrades. They accuse each other of being responsible for a war that has raged for years, but the realization that the end is near softens their hearts. As the oxygen runs out and every agonizing minute brings them closer to death, they have little choice but to confront the beliefs that have brought them here. The Other is now themselves. A time of reckoning is upon them. The choices they made look and feel different now. They see them for what they really are, with their true dimensions. The darkness of despair shines an all-revealing light on every aspect of their lives, some of which they have kept hidden from themselves till now. And no matter how much the war within them kicks against it, they come together. It’s inevitable. And when the hand of the Palestinian’s wife, who is also trapped, emerges from the rubble, the war of two worlds in the person of two men “ends” in a startling finale.
