Full schedule of the 3rd Meeting of Young Artists of Southeast Europe (26/08/2019)
3rd Meeting of Young Artists of Southeast Europe
Ancient Drama and Politics
Viewpoints and Approaches
The National Theatre of Northern Greece is proud to announce the organization of the 3rd Meeting of Young Artists of Southeast Europe, entitled “Ancient Drama and Politics”, which will take place in Thessaloniki, from the 9th to the 19th of September 2019 as part of the International Network of Ancient Drama inaugurated by the Greek Ministry of Culture.
The creation of a “core” in which various artists from different cultural backgrounds will work on ancient drama, exchanging their views on its political dimension and trying to approach ancient texts in a contemporary way, is one of the main targets of this Meeting. The artists will have the opportunity to get acquainted to experts and practices that will help them to develop their work.
During the 1st Meeting we tried to trace the limits and the possibilities of ancient drama whereas in the 2nd Meeting we focused on the Comic element, not only in comedies but in tragedies as well. This is the third year in which the idea of democracy and the public space, will be our main topic.
For ten days in September, a series of workshops and masterclasses will be conducted by experienced and well-acknowledged directors, while international performances of well-established theatre companies will be presented at the NTNG stages, as well. Moreover, the Meeting will include lectures, open presentations and open discussions in which interesting issues will arise, from linking ancient drama with contemporary politics. What’s more, for the first time participants will have the chance to appreciate the results and the experiences of the two previous fruitful Meetings.
The 3rd Meeting of Young Artists of SE Europe is subsidized by the Greek Ministry of Culture as part of the International Network of Ancient Drama.

WORKSHOPS
The suspended body”
by
Io Voulgaraki
(Acting Workshop)
10-15 September
The workshop will take ancient drama’s most ambivalent Chorus as its starting point: the Argive elders from Aeschylus’ Agamemnon. Although they are forever being overtaken by events, the conflict is only profound in so far as it conceals a profoundly personal involvement. The Argive elders are bodies in a state of permanent and agonizing suspension, and this is what we will set out to study.
“Theatre and Politics”
by
Árpád Schilling
(
Acting Workshop
)
16-18 September
Taking ancient drama as its reference point, this workshop will look at the link between theatre and contemporary politics and social issues. Why do we address our work at audiences and what do we seek to achieve by doing so? How do we make use of space, and how do we open up conflicts and characters?
“Ancient Drama: How relevant is it?”
by
Kenny MacLellan
(Scenography Workshop)
10-18 September
In this scenography workshop, we will research an ancient theatrical text at the visual approach level and pose questions relating to which of its politically-related subjects and/or issues are of relevance to us today. The workshop will have two phases: In the first, we will conduct research in the visual field. In the second, we will build a 3D model of the stage set and costumes based on concepts arrived at during phase one.
“Oedipus Genos”
with the multinational group of participants from the 2nd Meeting
of Young Artists from South-East Europe (Workshop)
10-18 September
The “Oedipus Genos” workshop came into being thanks to the efforts of participants in the two previous Encounters for young artists from SE Europe. Using excerpts from various ancient plays in five languages, the participants will combine techniques from physical theatre and puppeteering with a view to exploring the universal nature of ancient Greek drama with a focus firmly on the present.
