“One rock with two peaks”: A spatial interpretation of Sophocles’ “Antigone”
Amalia Papastergiou, Konstantina Giannoulaki (graduates of the School of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki)
The building is designed in a way so the users, according to the choices they make while moving through it, will identify themselves with one of the heroes of Sophocles’ tragedy “Antigone” on a psychological, emotional, social and political level.
The space becomes personal as it encourages consciousness to appear. The emotional state of each user/hero shows itself on the walls, on the floors and on the ceiling of each room. Every user will have a unique experience according to his/her own point of view and personal choice. It is all up to where they choose to turn, and how far the will go for the experience to happen.
The ultimate goal of the spatial interpretation of the tragedy of Antigone is to investigate the way architecture interacts with the users, and in this different mindset to look at our surroundings in a more critical way, in order to claim, as citizens, our own, democratic, public space.
