Director’s Note
The story’s fraternal twins are called to fulfill their mother’s last wishes. In case they accomplish their mission, at the end of this long way towards adulthood, there is a secret hidden for many years; a secret regarding their birth deeply buried by the irrational violence of the war. It was further covered by History and well-kept by silence. However, it’s time this secret was revealed. But, “some truths can only be revealed if you discover them by yourself”.
"Incendies" by Wajdi Mouawad is actually a poem; a poem written with mathematical accuracy. The geometry of its plot would be incomplete without the thick and so deeply moving speech and vice versa. All action is evolved at the present time, in the past or during a fictional time which does not really exist. The play keeps up with all these time leaps and competes with this condition, refusing realism and trying to say that finally time does not really exist. The only thing that still exists is the human being, capable of both achieving the miracle and committing the most horrible things.
Maybe this kind of contradiction lives/is placed in the heart of the play defining it as a modern tragedy. Maybe this kind of contradiction allows us to believe –without being naive– in miracles.
PS. The production is dedicated to the memory of the great Lithuanian director Eimuntas Nekrošious who died in November 2018.
Wajdi Mouawad
Over the past twenty years Wajdi Mouawad has established himself, both in Canada and in Europe, as a uniquely original player on the contemporary theatre scene, acclaimed for his direct and uncompromising narratives and his spare and compelling theatre aesthetic. In all his work, from his own plays (over fifteen to date, including Tideline, Scorched, Forests and Heavens and adaptations (including Céline’s Journey to the End of the Night and Cervantes’ Don Quixote), the productions he has directed (including Macbeth, The Trojan Women and Three Sisters ), to novels (Visage Retrouvé, Anima ) Wajdi Mouawad expresses the conviction that “art bears witness to human existence through the prism of beauty”. Wajdi Mouawad’s plays have been translated in more than twenty languages and presented in all parts of the world, including Great-Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Australia and the United-States. In April 2016, he was appointed as director for the National Theatre in Paris, La Colline.
