An ant- Nazism play, a political allegory, talking about the freedom of human and the massive hysteria that totalitarian regimes and collective fanaticism create. Its hero Berenger, who detests the manifestations of the crowd and the military marches, senses the futility of daily life. The climate of a massive reaction leading to a massive hysteria, it is created when the rhinoceros appear: not the real beast but people transformed in beasts. Little by little, everyone wants to be a rhinoceros, everyone for its own motif. Only Berenger, controls the situation having as only weapon its human intuition and thus he is rising beyond the blindness of the mass to scream desperately in the end: 'I do not succumb. I'll fight. I''ll stay a human being to the end'. Ionesko comments the insignificance of the political systems, which dehumanize people, and ascertains that History loses all reason. The falsehood of every propaganda, exist to cover the contradictions between the events and the ideologies that they serve.
