When love rules...
The romantic drama “Romeo and Jeannette” by the great French playwright Jean Anouilh reminds the audience of the meaning of romance and the sacrifice that a great love entails. The actors’ performances spotlight the poetic language of the text, its romance mixed with realism.
Anna Fonsou directs and the Greek translation is by Alexis Solomos, who loved this play and to whose memory this production is dedicated.
This is the first time that the National Theatre of Northern Greece stages a play by the great French dramatist. It is a work of extraordinary mastery, which wields sarcasm to tackle its characters’ despair and desperation.
Love is timeless. When hate and jealousy are no more, what remains is love!
“Romeo and Jeannette” was written in 1945. In it, Jean Anouilh reiterates the primary themes that run through his oeuvre: the struggle between freedom and society, the individual and the primordial power of emotion against institutions. Between life, which persists, and death, which lurks alongside love’s unyielding power. What way out is left for those who resist? Where does saying “no” over and over again to compromise and conformity ultimately lead?
