A few words about the play “Τhe Comedians” by Dimitris Piatas and Sakis Serefas is dedicated to the first Greek comedians of the silent cinema. A fiction based on true events in the career of the Greek “Charlot”, Michail Michail son of Michail. The text revolves around two films from the silent era: “Villar in the women’s baths at Neo Faliro” and “Kontseta-Moshou marries Michail”. Michail Michail made his film debut in the first of the two, which starred Nikolaos Sfakianos. “Kontseta-Moshou marries Michail” was a big hit and was screened for several years. The actor continued his career in the theatre, but died poor and forgotten during the German Occupation.
Through the history of Greek silent cinema, Dimitris Piatas and Sakis Serefas create an imaginative comedy with burlesque elements, live music and found historical documents. Its protagonists are real actors from the Greece’s turbulent interwar years, 1920–1939; áctors who, though now forgotten, left their mark all the same and paved the way for later generations of Greek comedians.
