A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE PLAY
Published by Fyodor Dostoevsky in 1866, “Crime and Punishment” is considered the finest novel the world has produced. A foundational text for understanding the human spirit, it pushes boundaries like no other text in the Western literary canon. The character of Raskolnikov contains legions: Christ and the Devil, Hamlet and Superman, Don Juan and Gregor Samsa. For her part, Sonia represents every lost soul that has ever been deprived of hope and slaughtered, locked into the gas chambers to turn into ash and smoke in crematorium chimneys—the lost humanity that transcends the bounds of logic and expectation to seek justice not through revenge, but through love.
In this theatrical adaptation by Thanasis Triaridis, the action is shared between eight characters, with Dostoevsky himself featuring among the on-stage protagonists in the nightmare world of his invention. Here, the connection that is the common thread running through all of Triaridis’ stage writing is made in Raskolnikov and Sonia’s dreams: endless nightmares of a looming future with the gas chambers of Auschwitz to the fore.
