MONSIEUR LIHN AND HIS CHILD by Philippe Claudel, directed by Guy Cassiers (05/03/2024)
“Monsieur Linh and his child” by Philippe Claudel
DIRECTED BY: Guy Cassiers
VENUE: Theatre of the Society for Macedonian Studies
ΟPENING: 22 March 2024
Leading Belgian director Guy Cassiers is coming to Greece to direct Konstantinos Markoulakis in a staging of Philippe Claudel’s famous novel “Monsieur Linh and his child”.
In this, Guy Cassiers’ third Greek collaboration (the first was at the Athens Festival in 2009 and the second in 2011 in the opening season of the Onassis Stegi Cultural Centre), the former Artistic Director of the Toneelhuis Theatre in Antwerp, and one of the world’s most important contemporary artists, guides the great Greek actor and director through his unique sensory universe. The vehicle on this occasion is a deeply moving story about difference, loss, flight, the power of friendship and the optimism that reveals itself to us when the going gets tough.
Steering a course between the technological perfection of performance and the simplicity of sharing a story, Konstantinos Markoulakis, who also adapted the work for the production, initiates us into a personal on-stage approach which abandons the omnipotence of form so as to shed light on the vital content at the story’s core. In so doing, the production returns us to the root of theatre, which is none other than pure narration—presented here in every way using every medium.
The premiere will be given in Thessaloniki, on 22 March, at the Theatre of the Society for Macedonian Studies. This will be followed by performances in Athens in May.
A NTNG co-production with the Lykofos cultural organization.

Α FEW WORDS ABOUT THE PLAY
Mister Linh flees his war-ravaged country in search of a better future for his granddaughter. Mister Linh doesn’t feel at home in the foreign land where he finds himself, until one day he meets mister Bark. Mister Bark talks mainly about his wife who died recently. Mister Linh doesn’t understand him but he listens, his little girl on his lap. They meet on the same bench in the park every day until one day everything changes...
