Playwright, literature professor, theatre director and teacher. Many plays from his wide-ranging writing for the theatre have been translated into other languages (English, French, Greek, Basque, Italian, Romanian and Croatian): Food for fish (2005; Basque Literature Prize 2006), Prague (2013), Ivan (2017) and An Italian song (2021; Leopoldo Alas Mínguez Latin American Prize, 2021). Other important works include: Social Skills (2007), Chicken for China (2013), Defenseless (2002) and Opportunities (2014). His work as a dramaturg extends to adapting dramatic works, and includes the work he did for the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid on the original zarzuela (a Spanish theatrical form including musical acts) La marchenera [The Girl from Marchena] and The Duchess (2015–2018). Works of his have been staged in Italy, the US, Romania, Peru, Paraguay and—soon, within 2022—in Greece.
From 1990 to 2018, he taught Spanish Language and Literature, as well as the Performing Arts, in secondary schools, and Theatre Writing at the University of Alcalá (Madrid). He also coordinated the Postgraduate Programme in Theatre Writing at the same university, which was run in collaboration with the AAT (Association of Spanish Playwrights), whose Secretary General he was, 2015-2018. As a writer, he is also a member of the Spanish Academy of Stage Arts.
From 2018 to 2022, he directed the Centre for the Documentation of Stage Arts and Music, part of the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM) of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Spain. In 2022, he was appointed INAEM's Deputy Director General in the field of Theatre.
As founder and director of the La Barca Teatro company (1996–2017), he staged many of his own and other playwrights' works over the twenty-one years of the company's life, as well as making several dramatic treatments and adaptations.
