Stavros Tsiolis
Stavros Tsiolis (born In Tripoli, Greece on October 6, 1937) is a director of the new Greek cinema. He studied cinematography in Athens and since 1958 he worked as an assistant director on 54 films, many of which were produced by Finos Film. He directed his first film, “O mikros drapetis” (The little runaway) produced by Finos Film in 1968 and in 1970 he achieved international success with the film “Katahrisis exousias” (Abuse of power). He then abandoned the movie industry for fifteen years and made his comeback in 1985 with some very successful films.
His films have a very personal style as they are based on a subtle sense of humour, improvised dialogues and the frequent participation of amateur actors. Wandering is a recurring motif in his scripts, a wandering which takes in the region of Arcadia, his place of origin. In many of his films he casted amateur actors, like the poet Tassos Denegris or Argyris Bakirtzis, in main roles and thus he established them as emblematic figures of everyday heroes.
