OUR GREAT CIRCUS (14/06/2012)

Opening: Dassous Theatre Thessaloniki
Thursday 28 June, at 21:15

National Theatre of Northern Greece and Acropol Theater present this year’s summer season opening performance Iakovos Kambanellis’ “Our Great Circus” with Stavros Xarchakos conducting the orchestra on stage. Director: Sotiris Hatzakis. With: Giorgos Armenis, Tasos Nousias, Marina Aslanoglou. The opening performance will be given at Dassous Theatre, on Thursday 28 June.

Iakovos Kambanellis’ «Our Great Circus» is a milestone play not only for the theatre itself, but for the modern Greek social and political history. Through songs and drama scenes, the play is guiding us towards all important moments of history from the Turkish possession, the War of Independence in 1821, to King Otto, the Asia Minor Catastrophe, and the war in 1940. These are only a few historical moments that are depicted in the play, one can say a documentary that remains true and valid throughout the years.

The first performance of the play was in the summer of 1973 at Athinaion Theatre. Stavros Xarchakos is responsible for the music and Evgenios Spatharis for the settings. Tzeni Karezi, Kostas Kazakos, Dionisis Papagianopoulos, Christos Kalavrouzos, and Timos Perlegkas were among the actors. Nikos Xilouris was the singer. However, the mass turnout and the fiery response of the audience lead to the banning of the perfoemnaces by the dictatorship of the time. After the end of the dictatorship, the play was again presented at Acropol Theater.

Today, 39 years after the first performance, NTNG and Acropol Theater present the play again with Stavros Xarchakos conductor on stage the nine members of the orchestra while the audience will follow the actors of the performance: Giorgos Armenis, Tasos Nousias, Marina Aslanoglou, and the singer Zacharia Karouni.

Note from The Artistic Manager and Director of the Performance
Our Great Circus” is a documentary of all the years of our Greek Nation. It’s an epic play for the nation, where one can see the virtues, the deficits, the rise and the fall, the struggles and the agony of the people, which full of the great history, tries to find a path towards an ambivalent future. It’s the sinking of the after - war drama in the “Divine Comedy” of the ruthless Greek narration.

The premiere is scheduled on 28th June, at Dassous Theatre in Thessaloniki, while a summer tour will follow. The play will also be presented in Athens on 11 and 12 September at Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
