“DIONYSUS FEAST”

50 years of the National Theatre of Northern Greece

A stage synthesis based on ancient drama

Text Composition: K.H. Myris
Directed by: Yannis Rigas, Grigoris Karantinakis

A stage synthesis based on Aeschylus (Prometheus Bound, Oresteia, Seven Against Thebes), on Sophocles (Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone, Electra, Trachiniae, Ajax), on Euripides (Trojan Women, Electra, Orestes, Bacchae, Hecuba, Helen) and on Aristophanes (Lysistrata, Nebulae, Plutus, The Birds, Knights, Ecclesiazousae, Thesmophoriazousae).

An invisible hero of the theatre, a technician, part and parcel history, brings on stage a world shaped by art and truth. He converses with people who have marked the history of NTNG and his own life, but also with the roles, the texts which have endured much longer through time, always in dialogue with the present. Memory acts as a self definition mechanism of performance and of his own being- a re-composition of the past, building the blocks of a history starting not fifty but two and a half thousand years ago.

Oedipus, Antigone, Prometheus, Kassandra, Cletemnestra, Agamemnon, Electra and Orestis, Eteoklis and Hecuba, Ajax, Helen, the Messenger and the Guard together with Lysistrata, Myrine, Plutus and Nebulae appear on stage and talk about the same thing: the size of man before beasts or gods. They show the benchmark of existence which beyond time and place encounters the same common fate: our place in the universe, our attitude towards the Other; life. Its protagonists run their course and leave their mark, heritage, debt -maybe-but also a means to face and shape the present.
