The National Theatre of Northern Greece organizes the 1st Meeting of Young Artists of Southeast Europe. Entitled “Ancient Drama and Politics” (Tracing Limits and Possibilities) the Meeting will be held from 22 to 29 September 2017.

The Meeting is part of a three-year programme and aims to link the valuable inheritance of Ancient Drama with contemporary artistic creation and to provide motives to young artists from Greece and Southeast Europe to work on ancient theatre texts, bringing out new perspectives and correlations with the contemporary social and political reality.

Focusing on the educational nature of the activities and aiming to create a framework for dialogue that will provide stimuli and promote interaction between artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, the Meeting includes a series of workshops, masterclasses and lectures as well as performances by young artists. At the same time, open presentations and discussions with the public are planned.

To be more specific, from 23 to 27 September, the directors Simos Kakalas and Aris Biniaris will lead two workshops for Greek and foreign actors and directors. The workshops’ results will be presented to the public on Thursday 28 September.

In addition, two masterclasses will be offered: the first one, led by Georgina Kakoudaki (theatre theorist, director and Educational Programmes co-curator of Athens and Epidaurus Festival) will be held on Tuesday 26 September,16.00-19.00; the second one, led by Alexandra Kazazou (actor and director) will be held on Wednesday 27 September, 16.00-19.00. Both masterclasses will take place in the Foyer of the Society for Macedonian Studies.

The National Theatre of Northern Greece participates in the Meeting with a contemporary approach of Sophocles “Oedipus Tyrannus”. The play, performed by a group of young actors directed by Giorgos Kolovos, will be presented on Sunday 24 September, at the Theatre of the Society for Macedonian Studies. Two more presentations are scheduled: the theatre performance “Troas” by Dimitris Dimitriadis directed by Alexandra Kazazou and the performance-installation “Prometheus bound” directed by Athina Dragkou. After the performances there will be a discussion with the public.

The Meeting is part of the International Network of Ancient Drama established, coordinated and supported by the Greek Ministry of Culture.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOPS AND MASTERCLASSES

“Orestes” by Simos Kakalas, director
Based on Euripides’ “Orestes”, which outlines the wrecked Athens of the Peloponnesian War and the declining course of democracy, the workshop will detect the function of tragedy and the framework of its presentation. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with the mask technique and the possibilities of expression and representation that it provides to the actor.

“Theatre with Song as Vehicle” by Aris Biniaris, director
The participants of the workshop will have the opportunity to experiment using as vehicles traditional songs and the musicality of the texts of the ancient Greek tragedy. The seminar is addressed to young actors who seek to enrich, strengthen and deepen their relationship with their body, voice and expression. 

“The State, the Citizen and the Beginning of Dialogue” by Georgina Kakoudaki, theatre theorist, director and Educational Programmes co-curator of Athens and Epidaurus Festival
A workshop aiming at the management of public discourse through the works of ancient drama (Sophocles “Antigone”, Aristophanes “The Birds” and “The Clouds”).

Masterclass by Alexandra Kazazou, actress and director
This masterclass, with Alexandra Kazazou and members of the Teatr Andra,  will deal with the voice and the body as a single unified tool of the Performer, always through the dynamics of the whole.

Participation in the workshops and masterclasses is free of charge.
