2nd Forest Festival: “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes by the National Theatre, 9 September (03/08/2016)

2nd Forest Festival
“Lysistrata” by Aristophanes by the National Theatre
Friday 9 September, Forest Theatre (Theatro Dassous), Thessaloniki

Mihail Marmarinos meets the great comic poet for the first time, along with a group of exquisite actors. The play is presented in a new translation by Dimitris Dimitriadis.

“Lysistrata” was taught in 411 BC, approximately a year and a half after the disastrous debacle Athens and its allies experienced in the Sicilian Expedition. Within this ambience Aristophanes addresses an ultimate ‒partly farcical, partly tragic‒ appeal for peace, writing his most anti-war play and, at the same time, delivers to the international literature one of the most powerful symbols of feminine rebelliousness.

Play Synopsis
While the Peloponnesian War rages, keeping men far away from their homes, Lysistrata convinces the women of Athens and Sparta to abstain from their “marital obligations”, aiming at the discontinuance of the warfare between the two cities. At the same time, the women proceed in squatting the Treasury that funds the warfare. The women’s action has immediate results and the men’s side expostulates using all possible means. After setbacks, quarrels and negotiations, peace is achieved and the fact is celebrated with a Dionysian feast.
