“Plutus” by Aristophanes. On Wednesday 31 August and Thursday 1 September. Starring George Kimoulis, Giannis Bezos, Petros Filippidis. Play Synopsis
Chremylos, drowned in debts, goes to the Oracle of Delphi seeking advice for the right way to raise his son: honest but poor or wealthy and deceiver? Pythia, misty as always, urges him to take home the first person he meets on the way, as soon as he leaves the Oracle. This person is a blind old man, the god Plutus (Wealth), cursed by Zeus not to see where he gives wealth. Plutus refuses to be cured because he fears the wrath of the God. However, he is converted by Chremylos and his slave Carion, in order to allot his wealth to those who deserve it and not to the corrupt orators and the frauds. The goddess Penia (Poverty) steps in and tries to convince all that wealth will destroy the citizens, as the poor will rest and become lazy consequently. There bursts the objection by all the dishonest ‒ the priests not being an exception‒ who lose their privileges.
Director’s Note
In contemporary society, where money constitutes the building block of the whole value system, our production interprets this aristophanean comedy focusing on an event disregarded, most of the times: the fact that the poet in the end of the play installs god Plutus in the state, thus giving citizens the opportunity, since all necessary goods are public, to search for true wealth in ideas and values that they may have forgotten.
