ANGELA by Giorgos Sevastikoglou (04/12/2015)
ANGELA by Giorgos Sevastikoglou
Directed by Giorgos Paloubis
Lazaristes Monastery - Sokratis Karantinos Stage
From 22.1.16
It’s the 50s in Athens. Angela comes from her village to work as a servant in a bourgeois family. On the rooftops she meets the other “slaves”; they are fighting for a better life, each of them going through their own personal struggle. Memories from the country, loves, dreams, as well as a mysterious death intertwine, against a traumatized by the Civil War Greece, dominated by poverty, exploitation, the police, as well as the dream of fleeing and migration to America.
“
Angela
”, a folk tragedy instilled with poetry and truth, was written by Giorgos Sevastikoglou in Moscow in 1957. That is where he and his wife Alki Zei found shelter, persecuted for their ideas. The play was translated immediately into Russian and was staged at many theatres in Greece and abroad, undoubtedly constituting one of the happiest moments of Greek dramaturgy. 20 years after the first staging of the play at National Theatre of Northern Greece, “Angela” is back on the stage, directed by Giorgos Paloubis.
