PLATO' S THE APOLOGY OF SOCRATES (06/05/2015)
First performance: Thursday 2 of July 2015
Ancient Theatre of Larissa
Performance in the ancient Greek language with the use of supertitles in modern Greek & in English
The text by Plato "
The Apology of Socrates
" will be staged during the summer season of 2015 by the
NTNG
, with the support of the "
DIAZOMA
" association, in the original Ancient Greek text (with supertitles), directed by Dimos Avdeliodis, in several selected archaeological sites around Greece.
It is worth noting that it concerns of the first time in the history of theatre, as well as, in the literary data, that "The Apology of Socrates" will be staged in the Ancient Greek language, the way Plato originally wrote it down and gave it a form.
"The Apology of Socrates", which was written probably in 397 B.C., consists the only non dialogic text by Plato, as well as, the only one in which he mentions himself as present and active during the procedure of the Court of Heliaea.
With the Apology (Apologia) the ancient Greek civilization reaches its upmost expression, for the reason it had been incarnated into an actual and undeniable hypostasis with the lifework of Socrates, who wittingly concludes on death, rather than to loose his freedom and his joy of living an active life, based on his beliefs.
The purpose for the use of the original ancient text by Plato in this certain theatrical performance, is not for a simple ingenuity reason or a narrow literary or historical quest, but it has been our need, from the hearing of the "voice" of the original text, to listen and to experientially feel the emotions and the ethos of Socrates.
The translated supertitles will be a guide for the comprehension of the text, which will be profound and apocalyptic through the hearing of the ancient speech.
