ABOUT THE PLAY
"Leprentis", a comedy written in 1835 by the important fighter and author Michail or Miltiadis Hourmouzis, satirizes the Greek bourgeoisie in an Athens in the hands of Bavarians. The hero of the play is a rich, ugly old man who falls for a beautiful young girl. Onto this canvas march various figures from the neighbourhood, exploiting his weakness and trying to get money out of him. Their efforts furnish the occasion for many funny scenes, complemented by live music and songs.

Director's Notes
Michail or Miltiades Ηourmouzis. A rare figure in the struggle for liberation in 1821, a fighter, an ideologue, a politician, and writer. He used the theatre mainly to criticize the political and social situation of post-revolutionary Greece. In "Leprentis", his first attempt at theatre, no one can say that the caustic satirical elements in the comedies that followed, such as "Adventurer" and "Employee", are apparent. But the play is very solidly built and offers the audience the relief of an exquisite innocence which takes us into realms of the absurd.

For this production, we took Ηourmouzis’ own words as our guide, from a letter he wrote to his friend Melidonakis: "...Laid low with fever in my bed, and deprived of my friend and relatives, both embarrassment and melancholy had shares in my illness .... (about the situation in the country)... So I was forced, both for my health and for a temporary rest from the struggles of my soul, to become involved in something which would subdue the obtrusive shadow of remembrances in the hope of entertaining my soul and alleviating my ill humour… I found no better remedy than to write a comedy…Be sure, my friend, as far as the restoration of my health is concerned, I have indeed enjoyed what I longed for.
We have tried to do the same thing: To give audiences a little break from the anxiety and melancholy we are living through.
