“The Knights”
Premiere: Dassous Theatre Thessaloniki
Wednesday 4 & Thursday 5 July, at 21:15

National Theatre of Northern Greece and Acropol Theater present Aristophanes’ “The Knights” for the summer period of 2011-2012, interpreted and directed by Stamatis Fasoulis. Petros Filippidis as the Sausage-seller and Giannis Zouganelis as Paflagonas meet for the first time on stage.
The premiere of this hilarious, particularly political, and also extremely current comedy of Aristophenes will be held in Thessaloniki, Dassous Theatre in the 4th and 5th of July 2012.

“The Knights” show the fight between Paflagonas and the Sausage Seller making fun of the way politics is used to gain peoples trust. The Chorus of the knights plays a major role in demonstrating who will win this conflict.
As Paflagonas faces the Sausage Seller, the comedy stigmatizes and mocks of the political figures and their demagogue towards people as well as the vice of authority, the laicism and spoils, the PP0664J0001v03politics that only care for their party, and sometimes even the naïve way people act. The play is one of the most aggressive satires of Aristophanes, that although refers to the characters and situations during the Messenian War, it is relevant to today’s reality that our country experiences given through the unique comic view of our great poet.

A Few Words About the Play

Aristophanes’ comedy was taught at Linaia in 424 B.C. giving him the first prize. It is a play with many comedy features in which the knights are the chorus and help the plot of the play. Agoracritus is the only fictional character while Demos represents the people of Athens and is presented with human weaknesses, faults, and the indecisiveness the Athenians had.
The play starts with two slaves, Nikias and Dimosthenis, who, acting as Generals, complain to Demos, their master, about Paflagonas. (Demagogue Cleon). He is a new slave who through his flattering, managed to make him a stooge. The slaves then steal the oracles of the tanner Paflagonas and learn that he will in all be destroyed from the sausage seller, one of his own kind. The latter is Agoracritus (Athenian Demagogue). The news makes them very happy.
The prophecy comes true in the following scenes, where the two competitors are trying to outdo themselves in cursing and behaving as bad as they can.

Finally, Paflagonas is obliged to regard Agoracritus as his successor. Demos decides to let him supervise the city. In the meantime, Aristophanes through the Chorus finds the way to accuse the slave for the indecisiveness of the people of Athens.
Agoracritus and Demos reappear on stage. Agoracritus is well dressed and happy to announce that he boiled his master and made him new. Demos indeed is young and well dressed, dressed in the glorious clothes of Marathonas and Salamina, and is ready to make up for all previous mistakes…

The premiere of The Knights will be held on Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 of July at Dassous Theatre in Thessaloniki and a summer tour in Greece will follow. The play will be presented at Epidaurus on 20 and 21 July.
